Communications, marketing and income

jenny@visably.org.uk

I've worked in charity communications my whole career — fundraising campaigns, health promotion, national media campaigns driving political change, rebrands. I've been a consultant, an advisor and a strategist. I've worked at some brilliant organisations doing important things. But I've never worked anywhere quite like this.

What drew me to Visably was the transformation. I don't like standing still, and the chance to be part of genuinely rebuilding and improving a charity from the inside — quickly, without endless committees and hoops to jump through — was irresistible. At a big charity, you can spend months before a decision lands. Here, we pick up the phone. We see the results. We change things. I also happen to work with a team of 100% bonafide megastars, which helps enormously.

My role covers communications, marketing and income generation — which in practice means telling the story of Visably and making sure that story reaches the people who need to hear it, whether they're living with sight loss, thinking about volunteering or wondering where to give their support.

The part that never gets old is getting out into the community. Half the job is getting my two little ones packed off to nursery before the day starts. But once I'm out in the world, meeting the people Visably supports, hearing their wins, their hopes and how we fit into their lives is the highlight — my partner says I come home "buzzing." That's exactly how I know I'm in the right place.

I've always believed that sharing someone's story is a privilege. Being let into someone's life, even briefly, gives you perspective, gratitude and a habit of challenging your own assumptions. That's the bit of charity work I fell in love with, and it's exactly what I get to do here every day.

Outside of work, I live by the sea with my five-year-old girl and three-year-old boy, and I jump in whenever I get the chance.
